Our Story
We are a Vietnamese family-run boutique bed and breakfast, right on the beach. The building that houses the restaurant used to be our vacation home. We chose this out-of-the way spot for its serenity, beauty and magic. We started building Bamboo Cottages with the simple, idealistic objective of sharing what we value with others.
We opened in 2010 and are on one of the last truly secluded and tranquil corners of the island where our neighbors still go out on fishing boats everyday. We recently re-opened after pausing for almost 3 years due to Covid and are excited to welcome guests back to our special little getaway.
We have taken great care in sourcing and crafting what we serve from our kitchen. We use only the freshest ingredients, and whenever possible, local organic vegetables and organic herbs from our own garden. We never, ever use MSG. We strive to source our food for your best health and the planet. For example, we offer as many plant-based vegan and vegetarian options as possible and only serve better-than-organic, pasture-raised chicken and pork from small household farms. We do not buy any meat that comes from factories, period. And all of our seafood is sourced fresh daily, never frozen. As far as we know, we are the only kitchen on the island that commits to doing all of this.
Earnings generated from the cottages and restaurant has helped keep afloat our family’s long-running scholarship program for needy children in Phu Quoc and Saigon. The Phung Su Foundation ("Together We Serve"), which provides educational scholarships to disadvantaged youth in Vietnam who would otherwise have to work.
We think that future visitors should be able to enjoy what we do for generations to come, and therefore we strive to apply intelligent environmental practices, minimize our use of natural resources and walk as kindly and respectfully as we can on this Earth. We consider all of our staff to be part of our family, respecting each other’s dignity and recognizing everyone’s contribution with just compensation and a share of Bamboo Cottages’ success.
We are in a small bay (Vung Bau Bay) about a 45 minute drive from the main town of Duong Dong. There's not much right around us, except a few other small guesthouses, a few local residents and paradoxically one of the largest amusements parks in Southeast Asia, VinWonders (about a 15 minute drive). The study in contrast is kind of beyond words. Despite all of the changes to the island over the years, our little stretch of beach and the people around us remain mostly the same. Covid was hard for big tourism, but it was good for Mother Nature and for slowing things down. We haven't seen the coral reef near the cottages this healthy in years and Vung Bau Bay now resembles again what we first encountered when we arrived here almost 20 years ago!
This is where we hope you’ll come to slow way down, have a taste of the original Phu Quoc before the mega-developments arrived, and feel part of our family. We hope you will come, eat well, sleep well and connect to what matters most to you.
Thank you for reading!
Thank you, Mother Nature
for our place in the web of life!
